In this section all of the businesses registered with The Broughton Trader are listed in alphabetical order. You can select any letter from the A to Z bar, which is situated at the top of the Alphabetic Business Listing window. The list of businesses associated with that letter will be presented. The scroll bar at the edge of the listing window may also be used to move up or down the listing page.

If you are looking for "J.J.Sparks - Mobile Car Mechanic", for example, you might find that either under J or under S. Under S it would be displayed as "Sparks, J.J. - Mobile Car Mechanic". The location is determined in accordance with the wishes of the registered business.

The details given normally include the particular business or trader's name, the main purpose of the enterprise, e.g. "Landscape Gardening", the area where the business is situated and a contact telephone number. There may also be links to web pages with more information about the business. The purpose may be omitted when it forms part of the business name, e.g. "Affordable Carpets" of Croft. Not surprisingly, this business sells carpets.

If a link reads  [Card] , think of it as a Postcard or a Cardfile entry. It links to a part-page, within Trader webspace, holding additional details such as the following: Postal address, EMail address, Website address and logo of the business, plus a brief description of the service or facilities provided.

If a link reads  [Page]  or  [Pages] , then you can find one or more extra pages of information within the Trader website.

If a link reads  [Website] , then it is a set of web pages which are external to Trader. This type of link will open in a new browser window. You may choose to close that new window later on but the Trader windows will not be affected.

Please mention The Broughton Trader when you visit or contact an advertiser.

In this section the first page presents links for two entries from each of the three main classified areas, i.e. Shopping, Services and Business. You may select any entry of interest, to obtain further details, by clicking the associated  [More]  link. Or you may ask to see another page of entries from the area which interests you the most by clicking the  Next  link within the header for that area.

If you continue to click on the  Next  links you will move to further pages covering the chosen classified area. You may select a  [More]  link at any point. Only some of the entries from each area may be found by browsing. The particular selection of entries which you can find and the order of their presentation is likely to change with time.

If you want to browse in a different area, click the  First  link and you will return to the first browsing page, which contains entries from all areas. Then, click the  Next  link within the header of the new area through which you wish to browse.

Whenever you select a  [More]  link, the associated business information will appear. It may be in a pop-up window or in a full browser window. The browse window will not close at that point but it might become hidden behind the window displaying the entry which you have selected.

You can work with the browse window again later just by selecting it, for example, on your "Windows XX" taskbar. You will find that you have not lost your position in the sequence of browsing pages. It is not necessary to close any window which gives business information before continuing to browse.

The Classified section is the fastest way to locate items to purchase, or services or other businesses when you have some idea what you are seeking. It is split into three areas or categories -

First is Shopping. Very simply, you want to buy something and you may be either a member of the public or someone operating a business. Businesses which are "selling" are found here. Not all of them will physically operate a shop, as such. Some could be working via advertising in journals or using E-Commerce or catalogues, etc. What these businesses have in common is items available for purchase.

Second category is Services. Here you are a member of the public and you need something to be done for you. You need a car to be repaired or a dog to be groomed. Or you need a wedding to be photographed.

Third is Business. Here you are yourself running a business and you need something to be done for you. You need to recruit staff or you need to print a brochure. Or you need to draw up accounts for tax purposes. This category of service is typically known as "B2B" or "Business to Business".

Easy? Well, that's the background. We have tried to make it as simple as possible. If you still want to know about HOW to use the Classified section of the Trader website, read on -

The Home page is the main starting point for Classified information. For each Directory, e.g. Shopping, some important sub-sections are listed there. For example,  Children  or  Household . Click on any sub-section that interests you. Or, if you would like to choose from a broader list, click on  More... .

As you travel through a particular Directory you will see titles of further sub-sections, which you may select, and also links which provide information about the advertisers who are associated with the particular sub-sections.

Each index page of the Directory links back to the Home page and to other index pages.

When you select the link to a business its information will appear, but not in the window which contains the Directory index page. So you will have at least two windows open. The index page might be hidden behind the business page, according to the behaviour of your internet browser and the layout of your computer screen.

You might decide to close the business information window later on, or leave it open and just re-activate the window which contains the Directory index.

If you select a further business link it may replace business information already on display. A "Card" will replace an existing card and a "Page" will replace an existing page. But a "Card" will not overwrite a "Page" or vice versa.
