"In the summer of 1949, when I was eleven years old, father came home one day and announced that he had just bought a shop in a village called Broughton Astley and that he had put up our house for sale. Mother, in this case, had not been consulted. Anyway, our house in Nuneaton was sold for 1750 and the new place with all its fittings was purchased for 5000 and described by my father as a positive goldmine."

"The village was fourteen miles from Nuneaton and seemed to me to be half a world away. We moved in just before the school term began and, since we were now in Leicestershire, I was enrolled at Lutterworth Grammar School, a six-mile bus journey from Broughton."
