"In the summer of 1949, when I was eleven years old, father came home one day
and announced that he had just bought a shop in a village called Broughton Astley
and that he had put up our house for sale. Mother, in this case, had not been
consulted. Anyway, our house in Nuneaton was sold for £1750 and the new place
with all its fittings was purchased for £5000 and described by my father as a
positive goldmine."
