"In the summer of 1949, when I was eleven years old, father came home one day and announced that he had just bought a shop in a village called Broughton Astley and that he had put up our house for sale. Mother, in this case, had not been consulted. Anyway, our house in Nuneaton was sold for £1750 and the new place with all its fittings was purchased for £5000 and described by my father as a positive goldmine."

"The village was fourteen miles from Nuneaton and seemed to me to be half a world away. We moved in just before the school term began and, since we were now in Leicestershire, I was enrolled at Lutterworth Grammar School, a six-mile bus journey from Broughton."
