"My ape-like tendencies developed and I became very adept at running over the many
roofs of the village school and the parish church. Although I was warned about it many times, the warnings were like water off a duck's back."
"The sternest warning came after Inspector Lockton, the only policeman in the village, visited my father after my foot had gone through the slates of the school roof one evening, showering debris upon the heads of the local populace who were browsing through the offerings of the once-weekly travelling library. After that I had to climb more discretely."
