"Our main interests at that time were collecting birds' eggs, old books, keys, and daydreaming about space travel. The boys paper 'The Eagle' made its debut during this period and the exploits in space of Dan Dare fuelled our imaginations. I dreamed of becoming the first man in space. The interest in birds' eggs waned after I left the village, the key collection developed into an interest in locks, which in turn transferred itself to clocks and how they worked - and the interest in space continues today."

"In 1949 the Cinema came to the village! Once a month a sixteen-millimetre projector was set up in the church hall and for sixpence a head the fans of the silver screen could watch old, scratched films. There was a five-minute break about every fifteen minutes in order to change the reel, but this only increased our interest in what was to come."
